Accounts Receivable Hurricane Ida FAQ

How did Tulane determine the rebate rate for the Hurricane Ida campus closure?

For the 2021 fall semester, the vast majority of students were able to occupy their residence hall and use dining facilities, the Reily Student Recreation Center, and other campus services by Saturday, August 21, 2021 (two days prior to the start of classes for the fall 2021 semester.) With the last day of classes being December 21, 2021, there are officially 123 days in the 2021 fall semester. Between the day of residential student evacuation following Hurricane Ida (August 31, 2021) and the reopening of residence halls (September 24), a total of 24 days elapsed.

Students who did not evacuate with Tulane to Houston or with Tulane Athletics were rebated for 24 of 123 days, or 19.5%. This rebate was applied to housing charges (excluding Deming Pavilion), the base cost of the dining plan, and the recreation center fee.

Students who evacuated with Tulane to Houston or with Tulane Athletics were rebated 24 days less the number of nights spent in a Tulane-managed evacuation hotel (i.e. a student who spent 2 nights in a Houston hotel was rebated for 22 of 124 days). Deductions for nights spent in a Tulane managed evacuation hotel were applied to housing charges and the base cost of dining plans. Recreation center fees were rebated at 19.5% with no deductions for nights spent in a Tulane managed evacuation hotel.

For those rebated charges paid by a sponsor or athletic scholarship, the rebate credit has been returned to the sponsor or scholarship fund.

How did Tulane determine which charges are eligible for a rebate?

Tulane identified certain charges that were assessed for the entire 2021 fall semester, which should be prorated and rebated the portion covering unused services. These charges include the following: residence hall room (excluding Deming Pavilion), the base cost of dining plan, and recreation center fee. Charges that were not rebated include tuition, the academic support service fee, the Student Health Center fee, and the student activity fee as students continue to use and receive benefits for these charges.

Will Tulane rebate any tuition?

The academic calendar for the fall 2021 semester was rearranged following Hurricane Ida and no tuition rebates were given. Between August 30 and, September 10, two weeks of instruction time was paused as the university worked to triage major damage and restore utilities to our campuses. Classes resumed virtually on September 13 and resumed on-campus on September 27. Instruction was provided through December 21 and exam days wrapped into the instructional period.

When and how will I receive a rebate?

Rebates posted to student accounts on December 14, 2021. You may view your student account details through Gibson Online. Please click the “View Online Account” link.
