A Student No-Service-Required (NSR) Stipend is a payment made to a student to support their academic studies and living expenses, with no requirement to perform any work or services in exchange. It is essentially a form of financial aid, like a scholarship or fellowship grant. It differs from a scholarship in that it is not intended to pay for educational & other service costs billed by Tulane University.
The primary purpose of a no-service stipend is to enable a student to focus on their education, research, or training without the time burden of employment.
Important Waveworks! Transformation Update
Effective March 27, 2026, Tulane is transitioning Student NSR Stipend processing from Payroll to Financial Aid and Student Accounts. Students with stipend payments currently authorized through Payroll will receive a one-time consolidated payment on March 27, 2026, covering all bi-weekly stipends scheduled through the Pay Period ending August 6, 2026. Beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year, stipends will be disbursed once per semester through Student Accounts, on or near the start of classes. A new workflow system for department administrators to initiate stipend awards will open during summer 2026, and students will be notified when their future stipends are approved.
Payment Timing and Schedule
When will I receive my Student NSR Stipend
Beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year, stipends will be disbursed once per semester, on or near the start of classes for that semester. The exact disbursement date will be determined by the semester start date. You must be registered for the semester before your stipend can be disbursed.
What is happening with stipend payments scheduled between now and August 2026?
If you have stipend payments currently authorized through the existing payroll system, you will receive a one-time consolidated payment on March 27, 2026. This payment will include all future bi-weekly stipends authorized through the Pay Period ending August 6, 2026. You do not need to take any action to receive this payment.
What happens to stipends that were scheduled to be paid on or after August 2026?
Stipends originally scheduled for a pay period after August 6 will need to be re-authorized by your department administrator through the new workflow system when it becomes available during summer 2026. Once reauthorized, these stipends will be paid under the new semester-based schedule.
When will the new stipend workflow system be available?
The new workflow system for department administrators to initiate stipend awards is expected to open for the 2026-2027 academic year during summer 2026. Students will receive notice when their stipend has been approved. Specific timing will be communicated as implementation progresses.
Can I receive my stipend if I'm not yet registered for the semester?
Your stipend can be awarded before you register, but it cannot be disbursed until you are registered for the semester. The stipend will be held until your registration is confirmed. If you do not register for the semester, the semester's stipend will not be paid
What happens if I cancel my registration after receiving a stipend?
If your registration is cancelled after a stipend has been paid, the original stipend credit will be cancelled, and the balance will be billed to your student account for repayment.
How to Receive Payment
How will I receive my stipend payment?
Stipends will be paid by direct deposit to your bank account. You must set up direct deposit through Student Accounts to receive your payment. Paper checks will not be issued.
How do I set up direct deposit?
Follow the instructions on the Student Accounts Refund Disbursement webpage. The process takes just a couple of minutes to complete.
When should I set up direct deposit?
You should set up direct deposit as soon as possible to ensure you receive your 2026-2027 stipend payment without delay. Direct deposit information must be on file before the scheduled disbursement date for your stipend to be paid.
Will my stipend be applied to my student account balance first?
No. Under the new procedure, stipends will be disbursed directly to you via direct deposit regardless of any account balance you may have. Stipends are not applied to tuition, fees, or other charges on your student account. For non-resident alien students, your payment will be reduced only by applicable withheld taxes before disbursement.
If you would like to use your stipend funding to pay for billed charges on your student account, simply make a payment after receiving your stipend.
Tax Implications and Reporting
A stipend may be taxable depending on your tax status for U.S. tax purposes. For U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or resident aliens, Tulane is generally not required to withhold taxes on stipend payments; however, you may have individual tax reporting obligations.
For nonresident aliens, stipend payments are often taxable unless a specific exclusion or tax treaty benefit applies. Note that tax status is not the same as immigration status—for example, students in F-1 or J-1 immigration status may be either nonresident aliens or resident aliens for U.S. tax purposes, depending on individual circumstances. International students must have an active and complete GLACIER record (Tulane's online tax compliance software) before any stipend can be processed, including downloading, signing, and submitting required tax documents to the International Tax Office. Because tax treatment depends on individual circumstances, contact the International Tax Office with questions. Tulane cannot provide individualized tax advice, and you may wish to consult a qualified tax professional.

Will taxes be withheld from my stipend if I am a non-resident alien?
Yes. If you are a non-resident alien for tax purposes, the International Tax Office (ITO) will determine the applicable federal tax withholding rate before your stipend is disbursed. The required tax amount will be withheld from your payment, and you will receive the net amount.
For this reason, it is very important that you complete a GLACIER record and submit all required tax documents before the stipend is paid. If the required tax information is not completed in time, payment processing may be delayed, or withholding may be applied based on the information available at the time.
Will I receive tax documentation for my stipend?
Possibly. The tax form issued depends on your tax status and the type of payment.
Nonresident aliens for U.S. tax purposes may receive Form 1042-S for taxable stipend or scholarship-related payments that are reportable on that form. Students may also receive Form 1098-T if the payment is treated as reportable gift aid through the student account. However, Form 1098-T is an informational form and does not by itself determine whether an amount is taxable or non-taxable. Tax forms are generally issued in the calendar year following the year of payment. Form 1042-S is typically issued by mid-March.
Students should be aware that not all payments result in the same type of tax form, and some students may receive more than one form.
Understanding Your Stipend
What is a Student NSR Stipend?
A Student NSR Stipend is a form of gift aid awarded to eligible students to support educational expenses. NSR stands for "non-service required," meaning you do not need to perform work or provide services in exchange for this payment. Stipends are funded by various sources, including grants, departmental funds, or sponsored projects.
How is a stipend different from a scholarship or grant?
While stipends, scholarships, and grants are all forms of gift aid that do not require repayment, stipends are typically awarded for specific purposes or programs and are disbursed directly to you rather than being applied to your student account. Scholarships and grants are usually applied directly to tuition and fees.
How is a stipend different from student employment wages?
Stipends are gift aid payments that do not require you to perform work or services. Student employment wages are earned through work performed for the university and are processed through Payroll. Stipends are processed through Financial Aid and Student Accounts.
Can I use my stipend for any purpose?
Yes. Once disbursed to you, you may use your stipend for any education-related expenses, including living expenses, books, supplies, or other costs associated with your education.
